This is the first generation of the Clavinova, a Yamaha digital piano with the sound and keyboard touch of a grand piano.

The Clavinova brand began in April 1983, making it easy to enjoy the fascination of the piano.
Yamaha focused on new innovations in order to recreate the sound and keyboard touch of a grand piano, such as by developing a unique FM tone generator and keyboard mechanism.
In addition to piano sounds, this model also featured guitar and harpsichord sounds, for a total of 10 different instrument types.
The YP-30 also included a "stereo symphonic effect," which gave a feeling of power and depth to the sound, like playing in a concert hall or live performance club.

This was the first-generation model of the CVP Series, which offered a fusion of piano and electronics to broaden the player’s enjoyment of music.

This model featured the piano ABC (Auto Base Chord) function, which provided the springboard for the "auto accompaniment" feature now popular in models of the current CVP Series.
At the time, this was a revolutionary feature, allowing players to hear accompaniment just by playing a chord with their left hand.
The CVP-7 also offered a "ROM MUSIC" feature, which allowed players to load the pieces they liked and play them back so that they can play with orchestral accompaniment, broadening the enjoyment of music. In this model, a "guide" function was also provided for the first time, lighting up the next note to play by using guide lamps above the keyboard.

This model used the latest sampling technology available at the time to faithfully recreate the grand piano sound.

The CLP-50 was the first model to feature an AWM (Advanced Wave Memory) sampling tone generator with the digitally-recorded sounds of actual instruments that were processed using Yamaha’s proprietary musical processing technology.
This new technology allowed the sounds of the grand piano to be faithfully recreated, from the subtle attack heard when pressing a key to the rich reverberations and beautiful lingering sounds before the sound naturally decays.

This is a limited-edition Clavinova model commemorating the 100th anniversary of Yamaha.

This model was based on the CVP-10, the top of the line at the time, offering a shiny, mirror-smooth finish in black, white or mahogany.
This elegant limited-edition Clavinova model appropriately heralded the 100th year of Yamaha.

This Clavinova model featured refinements in its sampling system and key mechanism, with improvements in sound presence and keyboard feel.

The tone generator used AWM stereo sampling, with sounds recorded in stereo.
This model made an expansive sound with depth and richness like that of a grand piano a reality, thanks to the use of sounds created using data recorded on both left and right channels, offering elegant reverb.
The AE (action effect) keyboard (first released in 1986), which applied the hammer action principle used on acoustic pianos, was improved on this model.
The key touch was even closer than before to that of a grand piano.

This Clavinova model used a GH keyboard and AWM dynamic stereo sampling, in the pursuit of even more faithfully recreating the grand piano sound and touch.

The key weight of a grand piano varies slightly between lower keys and higher ones, and the Graded Hammer (GH) keyboard used on this model reproduced these minute differences.

In addition to the GH keyboard, this Clavinova model used AWM dynamic stereo sampling, a multi-step sampling system of the grand piano sound that changes according to the playing strength.
This keyboard is still used on Clavinova pianos to this day. With a new sound and playing feel, the expressiveness of the Clavinova had evolved to a new stage.

This model featured 613 sound types, with a maximum polyphony of 128 notes. The display was also enlarged, and the instrument supported new tone generation standards.

The CVP-98 featured a large 320×240 pixel-wide LCD that supported Japanese display, including the names of sounds, accompaniment styles and songs.
The various functions of this model, such as with the selection of sounds and styles, were also easier to use than in previous models. The CVP-98 supported not only the GM standards for using performance data with different electronic instruments, but also offered a richer selection of sounds, a wider degree of compatibility, and future expandability through the XG format—the tone generation standards proposed by Yamaha. This Clavinova made dynamic playback of music data possible.

The CLP-990 brought the Clavinova line as close as possible to the sound and feel of a grand piano, featuring the world’s first 88-key sampled sounds and a large sample memory that offered beautiful sound, as well as the first wooden keyboard to be used on a Clavinova. This model was sold as the CWP-1 in Japan.

This Clavinova model featured recordings even closer to that of a piano, thanks to its new tone generator. This was the first model to feature a color LCD and premium voices.

The CVP-209 featured "key-off sampling" and "string resonance," which recorded the transformations in sound that normally occur on a real grand piano, such as the slight change in sound when you take your hand off the key, or the resonance between piano strings. The combination of this tone generation with key action made a natural, lingering sound and reverberation a reality.
This model offered 870 sounds, including "premium voices" which reproduced the sounds of different instruments with superb realism. The maximum polyphony was 256 notes.
Also, a color LCD was used for the first time, and the piano body featured a luxurious mirror-smooth finish.

This Clavinova model included new features such as a GH3 keyboard and iAFC audio technology, recreating the reverberations and the unique performance methods possible with a grand piano.

The GH3 keyboard is based on the GH keyboard, and features three sensors including the proprietary Yamaha damper sensor.
This keyboard made it possible to perform advanced techniques particular to a grand piano, such as repeated notes in rapid succession. The state-of-the-art iAFC instrument acoustics technology was featured for the first time in this instrument.
This technology reproduces the feeling of depth and dimension of performing on stage, as well as the sympathetic resonance between strings on a real piano when the damper pedal is pressed.
This CLP-170 was offered in three finishes—dark rosewood, cherry and mahogany.

This Clavinova was the first digital piano in the world capable of directly connecting to the Internet.

The CVP-309 offered "Internet Direct Connection" functionality, for a direct connection to the Internet.
Subscription to the dedicated "Net Music Town" website allowed players to enjoy the digital piano in a totally new way, with data for around 6,000 pieces (at that time) that let players perform while reading sheet music or use the Clavinova for karaoke or background music.
This model was also the first to feature a "Natural Wood" (NW) keyboard. This keyboard features solid wood in order to offer a comfortable playing feel close to that of a grand piano, and was also used mainly in the top-of-the-line model Clavinova pianos thereafter.

This Clavinova model was the predecessor of the MODUS, and was designed as a "proposal for interior design" aimed at people who desired a truly stylish piano.

The CLP-F01 won the "Good Design Award" in 2005.

The CLP-380 used the sound of the very best of Yamaha’s top-class CFIIIS full concert grand pianos, tuned to perfection.
Every sound from this piano was sampled to create the "PureCF Voice." The strong point of this model was its realistic playability, even more faithful to the original piano sound.
This was the first model in the CLP Series to offer "Internet Direct Connection" functionality, allowing players to directly connect to a dedicated website and make use of a rich selection of song data.
The CLP-380 brought together the sound, playing feel and functionality that had been cultivated over the 25-year history of the Clavinova line.

This digital piano was designed with the new Clavinova concept of "Real Grand Expression," offering grand piano-like expressiveness with its well-balanced sound, keyboard and pedals.

The CLP-585 inherited the "Real Grand Expression" concept in the pursuit of a more piano-like experience, from the reverberation of the sound to the keyboard feel and design.

Special attention was paid to recreating the expressiveness of an authentic piano, offering multiple concert grand piano sounds to broaden the player’s sonic palette when performing.
